Beau Vaughan recorded his 11th save of the season by retiring the final five outs. Vaughan, who leads Red Sox Minor League pitchers in saves, fanned Luke Appert and Mike Eylward to end the game.

Tyson Brummett (1-2) fired seven strong innings on two runs but took the loss for Reading. Wagner's game-winning homer came with one out in the second inning. Zach Daeges started the rally with a walk.

Bowden retired the first 14 batters faced until Neil Sellers and Appert had back-to-back singles. The righty fanned four and didn't issue a walk.

T.J. Large earned a hold with a scoreless sixth inning. Daniel Bard allowed one unearned run over 1.1 IP but notched his second hold of the year. Reading's lone run came in the eighth inning on Jeremy Slayden's 2-out RBI single.
