Monday, July 7, 2008 at 10:50AM The Clippers improve to 51-38 overall and 28-20 on the road, while the Indians fall to 42-49 on the season and 21-23 at home. Columbus has now won 10 of the first 12 meetings in this year’s head-to-head series.
Escobar’s sixth homer of the season -- a towering shot off the flag pole in left -- came after 2B Ofilio Castro drew his second lead-off walk of the game.
The Clippers then plated a run in the 10th to win just their second contest this season when trailing after eight frames (2-35). CF Ryan Langerhans smashed a double down the right-field line, moved to third on a groundout and scored when the Tribe catcher got crossed up on a breaking ball with two outs.
Langerhans (4-for-5, 1 R) recorded his first four-hit effort of the year and Columbus’ only multi-hit game of the night, while Castro (0-for-3, 2 R) was the only individual from either side to score more than one run.
Clippers RHP Levale Speigner (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 SO) earned his second win in as many decisions, while RHP Jim Ed Warden (1.0 IP, 1 H) escaped the 10th for his fourth save of the campaign.
Indians RHP Marino Salas (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) was pinned with his third loss in five decisions after RHP Matt Miller (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) suffered his third blown save of the season.
Neither starter -- Columbus RHP Garrett Mock (5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 SO) or Indianapolis RHP Jason Davis (6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO) -- figured in the decision.
The Clippers cracked the scoreboard with a run in the second. Castro drew a lead-off walk, moved to third on C David Wallace’s double to center and came plateward on Mock’s sacrifice fly to right.
The Indians evened the score with a run in the fourth. 1B Craig Wilson and LF Matt Kata roped back-to-back singles before Wilson raced home on 2B Luis Ordaz’s double down the left-field line.
Indianapolis pulled ahead in the fifth when SS Brian Bixler plastered a two-run homer to dead center. Bixler’s sixth long ball of the campaign came after LF Nyjer Morgan reached on a fielder’s choice.
Wilson (3-for-5, 1 R) and Kata (2-for-5) managed the Tribe’s only multi-hit performances. Morgan went 1-for-5 with one run and extended his season-best hitting streak to nine games.
Columbus’ late rally gave the Indians just their second loss this season when leading after eight innings (36-2).
