Mobile BayBears Outlast Montgomery Biscuits 6-4 - Southern League

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - MONTGOMERY, Ala. - After a 15-inning marathon on Monday, the last thing the BayBears wanted on Tuesday was extra innings, but that's exactly what they got in another winning effort, 6-4 over the Montgomery Biscuits.

Entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the BayBears (38-53, 9-12) were on cruise control as they took a 4-1 lead into the final frame. Jose Marte (3-1) recorded the final out of the bottom of the eighth and took the mound in the ninth in search of his second save. A lead-off walk put Marte in trouble and a couple singles plated a run to make it 4-2. When Chris Nowak bounced into a fielder's choice, it pulled the Biscuits (43-48, 9-12) within one but also made the second out.

Gaby Martinez bounced to Yunesky Sanchez at short to seemingly end the ballgame, but Sanchez bobbled and everyone was safe. Rhyne Hughes walked to load the bases, and Marte hit Matt Spring with a 3-1 fastball to let in the tying run. It wouldn't stay tied for long as Cyle Hankerd saved the day with a two-out, two-run single in the 10th to drive in Rusty Ryal and Cesar Nicolas with the go-ahead runs.

Cesar Valdez was solid in his third start as a BayBear while working 5.2 innings and allowing a run on four hits with six strikeouts. Jino Gonzalez also fared well for

the Biscuits with 5.1 innings under his belt and three runs allowed on four hits.

Game two of the series between the BayBears and Biscuits will be under way at 7:05 on Wednesday night as the BayBears send Brooks Brown (5-9, 3.83) to the mound to face right-hander Wade Davis (8-6, 3.98). The BayBears return to Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday, July 16 to battle the Chattanooga Lookouts at 7:05 p.m. Call for tickets at (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
