State College Spikes Rough Up Auburn Doubledays, 11-3

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -STATE COLLEGE, PA – The State College Spikes pounded out 14 hits, including ten for extra bases, to hammer the Auburn Doubledays, 11-3, on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Before crowd of 3,666 witnessed a spectacular postgame fireworks display, State College (7-8) started the fireworks early. Kyle Morgan crushed a two-run home run to center field to tie the game, 2-2. The Spikes never looked back after that, scoring single runs in the second and third before erupting for three runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth to cap the victory.

Four different Spikes collected two or more hits, including three by Ty Summerlin and three by Aaron Baker, who also delivered a pair of doubles. Pat Irvine drove in four runs, including a bases-clearing triple in the seventh.

The Spikes amassed seven doubles and two triples as a team, both season highs. The win allowed State College to pick up its first series victory at home in 2009, as the Spikes took two-out-of-three from Auburn (5-9) for the second time in eight days.

Maurice Bankston (1-0) picked up the victory for the Spikes after starting and going five innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and a walk. Bankston also struck out two in the win. Michael Felix (1) earned the save after going four no-hit innings to finish the game, allowing one run on two walks.

Doubledays starter Brian Justice (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs over 1 1/3 innings. Justice also allowed five hits and a walk while striking out three.

Saturday, the Spikes host the Williamsport Crosscutters, the affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, for a 1 p.m. Independence Day matchup. State College sends left-hander Tyler Cox (2-1) to the mound for a rematch of Opening Night against Williamsport right-hander Siulman Lebron (2-1).

Fans can start their Fourth of July celebrations at the ballpark with the first Scratch ‘n’ Win Saturday of the year. All fans will receive a scratch-off card as they come through the gates, and every card is a winner. Plus, one lucky fan could win the grand prize of tickets to every Spikes home game in 2010.

Individual picnic tickets will also be available with Picnic-Palooza at the ballpark. For $14.75, fans can enjoy a one-hour all-you-can-eat buffet in the left field Picnic Pavilion starting at game time. Families can also get in on the fun as all on-field contests feature clans of Spikes fans facing off in the Family Olympics.
