Augusta GreenJackets Continue Domination of Lexington Legends With 3-2 Win to End Homestand

Augusta, GA – The GreenJackets (50-20, 8-4) won their third straight over the Lexington Legends (31-39, 3-9) with a 3-2 win on Monday and finished their eight game home stand 5-3. Starter Adam Cowart won his 10th game of the season with seven solid innings of work and Matt Weston delivered the key hit with a solo home run to give Augusta the win.
The GreenJackets broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning when Weston connected for a two-out solo home run to right-center field. It was Weston’s seventh of the season and first since June 2 at Asheville.
Cowart allowed two runs on six hits to become the third pitcher in the South Atlantic League to 10 wins, a day after his teammate Ben Snyder recorded his 10th.
Cowart allowed just one base runner between the third and sixth innings, a lead off walk in the fourth inning.
Augusta trailed 2-0 after one inning but plated single runs in the second and third innings to tie the game at 2-2. Mike McBryde connected for an RBI single in the second inning scoring Weston with one out in the inning to trim the Legends lead to 2-1.
Augusta tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning when Emmanuel Burriss scored on a wild pitch from starter Polin Trinidad. Burriss was on second base but then stole third base and on the play the pitch to the plate was thrown in the dirt and back to the backstop. Burriss kept running around third and scored on the wild pitch.
David Newton worked 1.1 scoreless innings in relief of Cowart and issued one walk while striking out two.
Juan Trinidad recorded his 16th save of the season recording the final two outs in the game. Trinidad allowed one hit and struck out a batter.
The GreenJackets head out on the road for a four game series beginning Tuesday night with the Hickory Crawdads. The GreenJackets will send right-hander Kevin Pucetas (9-1, 1.55) to the hill in the first game of the series. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Game Notes:
Augusta did not commit an error in the game, breaking a string of five straight games in which they committed an error.
Augusta won its 13th series of the season.
The GreenJackets matched their high water mark of the season, 34 games over the .500 mark.
It was Cowart’s fourth time to go for his 10th win of the season, receiving three straight no-decisions in his previous outings.
