MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com – FREDERICK, MD – Carlos Sencion turned in his best start of the season and Myrtle Beach never trailed in doubling-up Frederick 8-4 before 7,111 fans at Harry Grove Stadium Saturday night. It was the fourth straight win for the Pelicans (7-3, 37-42), tying a season-high while also moving the club four games over the .500 mark for the first time all year. The Keys fell to 3-7 and 35-44.
Myrtle Beach struck first with Matt Young’s two-run single in the top of the first, but Frederick cut the lead in half on Jonathan Tucker’s first home run of the year (in his 251st at-bat) in the bottom of the frame. The Pelicans broke the game open in the third however, as Isaiah Ka’aihue socked a solo home run to left to make it 3-1. Young followed with a double to the gap in right-center, and Paul Bennett was then hit by a pitch to put two men aboard for the red-hot Quentin Davis. He extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine straight games with a two-run double, and Roberto Alvarez plated him later in the inning with an RBI groundout to make it 6-1. Myrtle Beach tacked on a run in the fourth on Eric Campbell’s RBI single and one more in the sixth on a solo home run from Jordan Schafer, but had to survive a couple of scares in the late going.
Sencion had allowed just a run on three hits in the first five innings, but his control began to leave him as he worked into the sixth. He walked Tucker to start the inning, and after former Baylor University star Zach Dillon flied out Mark Fleisher singled and Pete Maestrales walked to load the bases. That marked the end for Sencion, as Adam Stanley came on in relief looking for a ground ball that could potentially end the inning. Paul Winterling obliged, sending a roller to Bennett that turned into a highlight-reel 4-6-3 twin-killing when Elvis Andrus bare-handed the flip from Bennett and made the relay throw to defuse the threat. Stanley stranded men at first and second in the seventh, but in the eighth Winterling got some revenge with a three-run homer that cut the deficit to 8-4. Andrus started a 6-4-3 double play with a nifty pick on a short hop to end that inning however, and Sung Ki Jung then worked around a pair of ninth-inning singles to leave the potential tying run waiting in the on-deck circle.
Sencion (1-1) earned his first win with his longest start of the year, limiting Frederick to just a run and four hits in 5.1 innings (his previous high was 3.1 innings). He walked four and struck out two. Chorye Spoone (5-6) took the loss after throwing 33 pitches in the first inning and not being allowed to return because of Baltimore Orioles organizational policy. He allowed two runs (one earned) and one hit while walking two and striking out one. Young led the charge offensively with two hits and two RBI, while Roberto Alvarez also picked up a pair of hits and drove in a run. Andrus extended his hitting streak to a career-high 10 games with double in the fourth.
