Norfolk Tides Edge Charlotte Knights 4-3 - International League

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com -

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk received strong starting pitching from Brian Burres and held off a late Charlotte rally as they knocked off the Knights 4-3 Sunday night from Harbor Park.

With the Tides leading 4-1 entering the 9th inning, the Knights mounted a rally against Norfolk closer Jim Miller. Miller sandwiched two strikeouts around two walks to start the frame, but Fernando Cortez hit a soft liner to left that scored Royce Huffman to bring the Knights within two. Jason Bourgeois followed with a single to center that scored Nicholas Blasi and moved Cortez to third, chasing Miller from the contest and pulling the Knights within 4-3. Scott Chiasson came in and ended the threat by retiring Jerry Owens on a flyout to right, earning his first save of the season and giving the Tides their third straight win over Charlotte.

The Tides had taken the lead in the 7th inning, courtesy of some wildness from Charlotte reliever Boone Logan (0-1). Logan allowed a leadoff triple to Freddie Bynum, and followed by issuing four walks and hitting a batter in the frame. Chris Roberson and Oscar Salazar each drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the inning, and Brandon Fahey pushed home another with a bases loaded walk.

Burres overcame a shaky first inning to turn in a very strong outing in his first start at Harbor Park as a member of the Tides. After allowing a run on two hits and a walk in the initial frame, the 27-year-old southpaw retired the next 14 batters he faced before surrendering a leadoff single in the 6th inning. Burres allowed just a run on three hits and a walk in the outing, striking out five.

Fredy Deza (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief in his Triple-A debut, while Jon Leicester also hurled a scoreless frame.

With the win, the Tides pulled to within 6.5 games of first place in the IL South division for the first time since May 9.

Norfolk will look to wrap up a four-game sweep of the Knights on Monday afternoon, with first pitch from Harbor Park set for 12:15. Craig Anderson (4-8, 6.82) will take the mound for the Tides against Charlotte southpaw Wes Whisler (4-8, 6.82).
