Kinston Indians Double Up Winston-Salem Warthogs 10-5, Hogs Suffer First Sweep of Season

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Kinston pounded out 16 hits as they cruised to a 10-5 win over Winston-Salem on Monday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Indians swept the three-game series while dismantling the Warthogs pitching staff for 23 runs on 37 hits. It was the first time this season the Warthogs have been swept and drops them to 4-8 in the second half of the season.
Winston-Salem plated a run in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Micah Schnurstein. Robert Valido walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a passed ball. After a fly out moved him to third, Valido scored on the ground ball by Schnurstein to give the Warthogs a 1-0 lead. Cole Armstrong hit an RBI ground out in the third inning that scored Robbie Hudson from second base giving the Warthogs a 2-0 lead.
Kinston's offense exploded for four runs in the fourth inning as three consecutive singles started the inning and scored a run. After an RBI groundout by John Drennen, Matt Whitney blasted a two-run home run to put the Indians in front 4-2. The Indians scored four more runs in the fifth inning as both Max Ramirez and Whitney hit two-run doubles to extend their lead to 8-2. Kinston used three consecutive singles to start the seventh inning as the foundation for a two run inning as they went ahead 10-2.
Armstrong lifted an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 10-3. The Warthogs added a pair of runs in the eighth inning on RBI singles by Schnurstein and Cole Armstrong to cut the Indians advantage to 10-5. Every Indian picked up at least one hit as Whitney led the offense going 2-for-4 with a HR and 4 RBI.
After winning his last four starts, Warthogs starting pitcher Kyle McCulloch (7-6) was shelled for eight runs on ten hits in five innings to take the loss. Kevin Dixon (6-3) held the Warthogs to two runs on five hits in six innings to collect the win for Kinston. Scott Roehl recorded the final four outs to collect his 12th save of the year.
