Paul Oseguera tossed seven strong innings and the San Jose Giants used
a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Visalia Oaks 6-3 Tuesday
night at Recreation Park. Oseguera allowed just two runs on five hits
and retired the last nine Visalia batters he faced in earning the
victory. Six different San Jose players recorded RBI’s as the Giants
posted their second straight win over the Oaks.
The Giants (34-24) opened a four-game lead over Stockton (30-28) for
first place in the North Division after the Ports suffered a 9-0 loss
at Bakersfield Tuesday night. San Jose also owns a four-game lead on
Modesto (30-28) as the Nuts defeated Lancaster 11-6 to move into a
second place tie. 12 games remain in the First Half.
Antoan Richardson (2-for-3, RBI, SB), Ben Copeland (2-for-4, RBI), and
David Maroul (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) each finished with more than one hit
for the Giants. San Jose out-hit Visalia by a 10-7 margin.
The Giants jumped in front early with three runs in the top of the
first inning against losing pitcher Brooks Brown. Three consecutive
singles from Richardson, Brian Bocock, and Copeland to open the game
produced a run. Bocock later scored the second run of the frame when
Anthony Contreras lifted a sacrifice fly to center. Copeland scored on
Maroul’s two-out single into left center field.
The Oaks cut into the Giants lead with single runs in the fourth and
fifth innings against Oseguera. In the fourth, Bryan Byrne doubled and
scored two batters later on Brandon Burgess’ double. Then in the
fifth, Rusty Ryal led off with a solo home run down the left field line
making the score 3-2.
Oseguera recovered after the home run to not allow another base runner
for the remainder of his outing. The left-hander struck out one and
didn’t issue a walk.
San Jose added to their lead in the eighth inning when Richardson led
off with a walk and scored on Tyler Von Schell’s two-out double down
the right field line.
In the ninth, Maroul led off with a double before a one-out walk to
Brad Boyer. Adam Witter followed with a ground ball single through the
right side plating Maroul for a 5-2 Giants advantage. Richardson then
hit a sacrifice fly to score Boyer giving San Jose a 6-2 lead.
Sergio Romo relieved Oseguera to start the bottom of the eighth and
fired a perfect inning before allowing a one-out, solo home run in the
ninth to Byrne. Cyle Hankerd then singled prompting a pitching change
as Taylor Wilding was summoned from the bullpen.
Wilding hit the first batter he faced, Burgess, with a pitch to bring
the potential tying run to the plate. But the Giants closer responded
with consecutive strike outs of John Hester and Ryal to finish the
contest.
Notes: San Jose is 2-0 on their current seven-game road trip … Oseguera
threw just 74 pitches in improving his record to 5-2 and lowering his
ERA to 2.93 … Wilding has earned saves in the first two games of the
series giving him ten for the year … Witter (1-for-3, RBI) extended his
hitting streak to nine games with his ninth-inning single … Copeland is
9-for-20 (.450) in six games since returning from the disabled list on
May 31 … Richardson stole his team-leading 25th base of the year with a
stolen bag in the fifth inning … He’s four behind Modesto’s Eric Young,
Jr. for the league lead … Brown (7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) took
the loss despite not allowing a run after the first inning … The
right-hander, who fell to 5-2, was a Supplemental First Round draft
pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006.
On Deck: The Giants look for a three-game sweep of the Oaks when the
series concludes Wednesday night. First pitch at Recreation Park is
scheduled for 6:30 P.M. Ronnie Ray (4-2, 5.11 ERA) is slated to start
on the mound for San Jose while Visalia is expected to counter with
Hector Ambriz (2-3, 4.21 ERA).
