MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - It was a small consolation one night after being eliminated from the first-half title chase, but the Tulsa Drillers accomplished something Saturday night they had been unable to do this year. They won a doubleheader game at Drillers Stadium. After being swept in their first two home doubleheaders this season, the Drillers won the first game of DH with the Arkansas Travelers 4-1. The Travs answered with a 7-0 game-two victory to gain a split of the doubleheader.
Tulsa snapped a season high four-game losing streak with its game one defeat of the Travelers. Drillers’ starting pitcher Samuel Deduno (4-2) turned in another impressive performance by pitching a seven-inning complete game to extend his personal winning streak to four games. Deduno surrendered the one run by scattering five hits while striking out ten Travelers in seven innings.
Tulsa struck quickly in the bottom of the first inning as Jon Herrera singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Christian Colonel’s fielders choice. The Drillers added to their lead in the third when Herrera singled home Corey Wimberly who had singled to lead off the inning. Colonel collected his second RBI by doubling home Herrera.
Tulsa increased its lead to 4-0 when Rick Guarno led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field. It was Guarno’s third homer of the season. Arkansas scored its lone run in the top of the sixth as Curtis Pride doubled and scored on a single by Aaron Peel. The victory improved Deduno’s record to 4-2. In his last two outings, the right-hander has surrendered only 9 hits and 2 runs in 15 innings pitched, while striking out 21.
In the second game, the Travelers scored two first-inning runs off Tulsa starter Zack Parker (1-2) and never looked back. The Travelers added to their lead on Aaron Peel’s three-run homer in the third inning. Sean Rodriguez increased the lead to 6-0 with his seventh home run of the season in the seventh.
Arkansas completed the scoring in the seventh when Freddie Sandoval doubled and scored on a base hit by Michael Collins. Jordan Czarniecki and Herrera were the lone bright spots for the Drillers in the second game, collecting two hits each.
