MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com - PORT HURON, Mich . - The Port Huron Icehawks were not able to translate recent road success into a win on home ice Friday, losing a 4-2 decision to the Kalamazoo Wings at McMorran Arena.
The loss snapped Port Huron’s win streak at five games.
The Icehawks now share possession of first place in the International Hockey League (22 points) with Flint, after the Generals posted a win at Bloomington.
The Icehawks were unable to rally in a rough game that saw 21 penalties and 64 penalty minutes.
Port Huron opened scoring with a Brent Hughes power play goal 16 minutes and eight seconds into the first period on assists from Jamie Carroll and Jeff Zehr.
Kalamazoo answered back less than a minute later with a goal from Kory Karlander.
The second period opened with a quick goal from Kalamazoo’s Dan Tessier just 46 seconds in.
Consecutive power play goals by Kalamazoo’s Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn and Mike Manley extended the K-Wing lead to 4-1 in the second period, before Port Huron’s Tab Lardner got Port Huron back on the board with a goal at twelve minutes and 44 seconds.
Lardner extended his scoring streak to nine games with the goal.
The third period went scoreless, despite 13 Icehawks shots on goal
The two teams were even for scoring, with 33 shots each. Port Huron converted one of three power play opportunities, while the K-Wings were 2-8 on the power play.
Icehawks netminder Larry Sterling posted 29 saves between the pipes.
Port Huron is now 0-3 on the season series with Kalamazoo. The K-Wings halted Port Huron’s last win streak at four games with a win at McMorran Arena on Nov. 3.
