Tulsa Oilers Make Rocky Mountain Rage Slip, Take Win 3-2 - CHL
Monday, March 17, 2008 at 09:16AM MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com - Broomfield , Colo. – The Tulsa Oilers played the spoiler roll, defeating the Rocky Mountain Rage 3-2 at the Broomfield Event Center Sunday afternoon in the Rage’s final regular season home game. The Rage outshot the Oilers 52-23. Former Rage goaltender Guy St. Vincent led the defensive effort for Tulsa .
The Oilers improved to 24-33-4 (52 points) and sit in eighth place in the Northern Conference, out of playoff contention. The Rage owns a 35-21-5 overall record (75 points) and currently sits in sixth place, one point behind the Mississippi RiverKings, out of the top five Northern Conference playoff spots with three road games remaining in the Rage regular season. The RiverKings beat the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in a shootout Sunday following the Rage game. The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs (90 points), Colorado Eagles (80 points), Texas Brahmas (78 points) and Youngstown SteelHounds (77 points) take up the first four seeds in the conference.
In Sunday’s game, fans saw end-to-end action in a defensive battle in the first period with the Rage outshooting Tulsa 16-7. Rage goaltender Scott Reid and Tulsa goaltender St. Vincent led the way keeping the game scoreless in the period. St. Vincent filled in for Rage goaltender Terry Dunbar while serving a 15-game suspension in the first half of the season. He was then sent to Tulsa following Dunbar ’s suspension.
The Rage opened scoring just 43 seconds into the second period. Brent Cullaton skated down the right wing and sent an across ice centering pass to Pat Sutton who wristed the puck in net from just in front of the crease. Ladislav Kouba also assisted on the play.
In his second game with the Rage, forward Bill Newson extended Rocky Mountain ’s lead to two goals scoring from the left circle. The puck hit just inside the high left post before bouncing out at 4:34. Newson is a two-time All-Star who spent three seasons playing for Tracy Egeland with the Rio Grande Killer Bees. After getting traded to Tulsa from the Bees mid-way through last season, Newson did not play at all this season until now.
Tulsa answered back with two goals by center David Beauregard to tie the game at two goals a piece. Beauregard earned a shorthanded goal at 5:05 on a breakaway and added a powerplay goal at 11:39. The Rage closed out the first two periods outshooting the Oilers 41-19.
Right winger Kai Magnussen gave the Oilers their first lead of the game scoring at 3:59 in the third period. Magnussen’s tally would eventually be the game-winning goal.
