Derek Booth

Head coach and Director of Hockey Operations

Record with PrairieThunder: 51-78-13 (2 years)

Career record: 114-121-19 (4 years)

Derek Booth can’t remember a time when hockey wasn’t a part of his life. As a youngster growing up in Niagara Falls, Ontario, hockey became his passion.

“Hockey is what my life has been all about,” said the 37-year-old Booth, who is in his second season as coach of the Bloomington PrairieThunder. “I can’t imagine a day without hockey.”

Thus, it was only natural that when his playing career was winding down that Booth would turn his attention to coaching -- first, as a player-assistant coach, then as a head coach.

That trail led him to the Bloomington PrairieThunder where he was historically named the organization’s first head coach and director of hockey operations in June, 2006.

In that inaugural season, Booth had the task of not only beginning the process of building the team from the ground up, but also trying to educate and promote a game that had never been experienced by the majority of people in and around the Bloomington-Normal area.

While a 25-45-6 record in the United Hockey League wasn’t to Booth’s standards, his team provided enough excitement throughout the year to earn the franchise the No. 3 ranking in overall attendance among the 10-team UHL, averaging nearly 3,700 people per night over a 38-game home schedule at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

Booth began his head coaching career with the Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League during the 2004-05 season. He led the team to a playoff berth by setting a franchise record for wins and earned the league’s Coach of Year honors.

The FireAntz had a 32-24 regular-season record in his first season. They followed that season with a 31-19-0-6 mark in 2005-06 before Booth took on the coaching responsibilities with the PrairieThunder. In two seasons with the FireAntz, the team posted a 63-43-6 record.

Booth began his hockey career in Canada with the Cornwall Royals where he played for two seasons. He continued to play in Canada with the Sudbury Wolves, Hamilton Dukes and enjoyed a solid year with the Niagara Falls Thunder, as he finished with 50 points during the 1990-91 season.

Then, it was on to Toledo where he received many accolades. He was named Defenseman of the Year during his 1992-93 season with the Toledo Storm, leading the team into the league finals as its captain and notched a career-high 64 points.

Booth took on double duty when he filled the assistant coach position while also playing for the South Carolina Stingrays of the East Coast Hockey League during the 1994-95 season.

Vienna, Austria was the next stop for Booth as he led two different international teams to a Division Title from 1995-1998. He played in Germany during the 1999-00 season and finished third among team defensemen in scoring.

Booth served as team captain for the Peoria Rivermen during the 2002-03 season and moved on to fill the assistant coach position when he played with the San Angelo Saints during 2003-04. He also earned his second Defenseman of the Year honors.

By the end of his playing career, he had been recognized as a first team All-Star during seasons with Toledo, San Angelo and South Carolina.

Booth and his wife, the former Brenda Shelnick, reside in Bloomington with their three children: Pillar (7), Dawson (6) and Brendan (3).

Away from the ice, Don Parsons appears reserved and laid back. Get the 38-year-old veteran on the ice, and he becomes assertive and offensive with the puck. His statistics tell the story.

Last season he became the all-time goal scoring leader amongst American-born players in the history of professional hockey when he scored the 623rd goal of his 15-year career to surpass Joe Mullen.

“Individual records are always exciting and they are something I’ll look back on after I’m done playing, but right now to me it’s a team game,” said Parsons. “I’m not saying I don’t love individual accolades, but I’ve got team priorities first.”

That’s exactly the type of player and attitude PrairieThunder coach Derek Booth was looking for when he made Parsons the team’s No. 1 pick in the International Hockey League dispersal draft last summer.

Parsons, a graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell with a degree in marketing, began his professional career with the Nashville Knights of the ECHL in 1991-92. He played 63 games for the Knights in two seasons and scored 61 points. From there, he shuffled from Tallahassee, Johnstown, Baton Rouge and Flint before landing in Memphis where he played a career high five seasons.

He helped Flint win the first of three championships he has enjoyed as a player in 1999-2000. The other titles came in back-to-back years at Memphis in 2001-02 and 2002-03. Both championship seasons in Memphis, Parsons was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. He also earned the league’s MVP Award in the 2001-02 playoffs when he scored 24 points in 16 games.

Parsons was honored as the “Man of the Year” in the CHL and the Minor League Pro Player of the Year in 2002-03 when he scored 106 points on 57 goals and 49 assists. It marked the fourth time in his career that Parsons eclipsed the 100-point mark during the regular season. His most productive year was with Memphis in 2000-01 when he scored 113 points on 56 goals and had 57 assists in 69 games.

During his career, Parsons has appeared in 881 regular season and 108 playoff games for a total of 989 entering this season. He has scored 1,194 points on 623 goals and 571 assists in regular season games to go along with another 60 goals and 68 assists in playoff competition for an astonishing 1,322 points.

Parsons played in 262 consecutive games from 2003 through 2006.
