South Carolina Stingrays Defeat Charlotte Checkers 4-3

MLN - THE RAW FEED - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Charlotte, NC – The South Carolina Stingrays got a hat trick from  Trent Campbell on their way to clinching the second seed in the  Southern Division with a 4-3 victory over the Charlotte Checkers at  Charlotte Bobcats Arena.

“I am so proud of these guys right now,” said Head Coach Jared  Bednar. “We have been striving toward this goal for a number of  months now, and to be able to get there says a lot about the team.”

In the first period, the South Carolina Stingrays found themselves  killing off a number of penalties, which allowed the Charlotte  Checkers to get pressure on Davis Parley. But Parley continued his  stout play in net, and even though they were out shot 13-5, they  skated off with a 2-0 lead. Trent Campbell got both goals for South  Carolina, his 18th and 19th of the year. The first came at 11:38  with the lone assist going to Travis Morin. At 17:50 Campbell struck  again getting his second of the night from Sean P. Collins, giving  the Rays a 2-0 lead after one period of play.

The second period saw the Stingrays lead cut in half, 2-1, but not  for long. Once again, Trent Campbell scored past Chris Holt to make  the score 3-1. The goal came at 6:02 and was the second hat trick in  as many games for the Rays. On Tuesday Ben Nelson got a hat trick in  Augusta, this time it was Campbell with the trick. The goal was  assisted by Sasha Pokulok and Morin. Later in the period, Charlotte  got two goals in the span of five seconds to tie the game up at  three. At 16:28 of the period, the Rays took the lead once again.  Chris Chaput scored this time, from Trent Campbell, and South  Carolina skated off with a 4-3 lead after two periods of play.

The third period was a more defensive, close to the vest type  period. There were chances on both sides, but both goaltenders  prevented any scoring. The win for the Rays is the 46th of the  season, breaking the record set by the Kelly Cup winning 1996-1997  team that went 45-15-10.

The winning goaltender was Davis Parley who has now won his last 8  straight games. He stopped 35 of the 38 shots he faced. The losing  goaltender was Chris Holt who stopped 26 of the 30 shots he faced.  The Rays went 0-4 on the power play while killing off all five short  handed situations they faced.
