MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com -Trenton, NJ- For the second night in a row the Trenton Devils edged the Elmira Jackals in overtime 3-2. Tonight Eric Castonguay netted a goal 5:43 into the second overtime to give Trenton the win in front of 1,360 fans. Game seven on this Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
With the opportunity to advance to the North Division finals with a win tonight, the Jackals came out swinging out shooting the Devils 16-7 in the opening period. The Jackals looked to have taken the early 1-0 lead on a Colton Yellow Horn tally only to have the goal disallowed with no explanation. At the 6:19 mark of the first, the Jackals would put home a goal that would be awarded. On the power play Pierre-Luc Faubert and Brandon Roach set up Chaz Johnson for his second of the playoffs.
The high tempo in the second period was filled with big hits, big saves and penalties. The lone goal of the period was scored by Trenton’s Dave Leaderer at the 14:57 mark. After a successful Jackals penalty kill, Brad Snetsinger put a perfect one time pass onto the tape of Leaderer who beat Michael Teslak high blocker. The Devils owned the second period shot advantage at 10-7.
The third period was played as close as the first two frames. The Jackals picked up a 2-1 lead at 13:12 of the third when Derek Couture smashed home a Colton Yellow Horn feed from behind the net. Brendan Connolly also assisted. The Devils would pressure in the late moments of the period. While goaltender Jeff Frazee went to the bench for the extra attacker, Justin Coutu got the loose puck in front of Michael Teslak and put a shot off the goalpost and in to tie the game at 2-2. At the end of regulation Elmira held a 35-22 shot advantage and for the third time in the series an overtime period was needed.
The first overtime was filled with Michael Teslak saves as he turned away all 14 Devils shots. Jeff Frazee denied all six attempts the Jackals put his way. After 80 minutes of hockey another 5:43 would be needed to decide a winner. Nathan Perkovich moved into the offensive zone on a two on one and sent a pass to Eric Castonguay who beat Teslak for the game winner.
