You Say You Want A Revolution - York Names its Baseball Team for 2007

MLN Newswire - With nearly 3,000 total votes received, fan voting for the “Name York’s Team” contest has concluded, with Revolution narrowly edging out White Roses as the most popular among the five finalists.  The York Revolution is scheduled to begin play in the spring of 2007.

“The thousands of votes received is another indication of the tremendous momentum that is building for minor league baseball in York,” stated Hall-of-Famer Brooks Robinson, who in 1955 played his first professional game in York. “I am excited about the name ‘Revolution’ as it pays homage to the historical significance of York County, while representing a new era of baseball in this great city.”

The name Revolution connects with York’s colonial past, when the Continental Congress met in York and passed the Articles of Confederation during the Revolutionary War.  Following the American Revolution, York briefly became the first capital of the United States.

Because of the close nature of fan voting, when the York Revolution begins play next year, club officials have announced plans to recognize the name White Roses.  The team uniforms will feature a special patch commemorating the White Roses, the last professional baseball team to play in York. Also, officials of the York club and the Lancaster Barnstormers are in discussions to create a “turn-back-the-clock” series, in which York will wear vintage White Roses uniforms and the Barnstormers will wear uniforms paying tribute to the old Lancaster Red Roses.

“The main goal all along has been to listen to the community and allow the people of York to have the honor of naming its new team,” said Brooks, speaking on behalf of the Revolution.  “We thank all fans who voted in the contest and who have helped give York’s new team a great, new name.  I am looking forward to the Revolution playing ball next season.”

The five finalists were the names that received the most entries (after eliminating names already in use) from among 4,000-plus submissions during the initial phase of the “Name Your Team” contest, in which members of the community were asked to submit any name they wished.

The voting results among the five finalists, as previously selected by the community, were as follows:

REVOLUTION          25.9 %
WHITE ROSES           24.1 %
CHOPPERS                18.5 %
DUKES OF YORK     17.4 %
STEEL HORSES         12.5 %
WRITE-IN/OTHER     1.6 %

Fans voted from June 5-26 via the team’s website, at area Rutter’s Farm Stores or by mail.  The “Name Your Team” contest was sponsored by Fox-43, Rutter’s Farm Stores, WARM, WSOX, WSBA and York Newspapers.

A grand prize drawing will soon be held among all those who submitted the name Revolution for two (2) lifetime season tickets.  Given the close vote, club officials have also decided to award (2) season tickets for the inaugural season in a drawing among all entrants who submitted the name White Roses.  As planned, there will also be a drawing among all entrants in the “Name York’s Team” contest for two (2) inaugural season tickets.

With the team name now established, work will begin on the development and design of a logo for the Revolution.  The club also continues to solidify skybox and sponsorship partners and is working on a stadium naming rights partnership.  Inaugural season ticket plans and packages for the York Revolution are currently being finalized and information will be released in the near future.
