Tony Cordova Tapped as PCL Trainer of the Year 2006
Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at 09:42AM MLN Newswire - LAS VEGAS: The Las Vegas 51s professional baseball team of the Pacific Coast League (PCL), Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, announced that team trainer Tony Cordova was selected by his peers as the 2006 PCL Trainer of the Year. The award was announced by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS).
Cordova now becomes one of 16 league winners to be considered for Minor League Trainer of the Year, which will be announced and awarded at the Baseball Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida.
“It’s a great honor to be recognized by my peers,” Cordova said. “The real honor in this profession is to take care of the players and make sure they are healthy enough to play.”
He is completing his first season as the head athletic trainer for the 51s and also serves as the Dodgers minor league training coordinator. He has been a member of the Dodgers organization since 2000. He spent the previous five seasons (2001-05) as head trainer at the Dodgers’ Double-A affiliate Jacksonville. The Suns captured the 2005 Southern League Championship. He worked the 2000 season at the Dodgers’ Single-A affiliate in Yakima, Wash. He also worked in the Arizona Fall League in 2002 and 2004.
Prior to joining the Dodgers, he worked as a graduate assistant at the University of New Mexico, where he earned his master’s degree in sports administration. The El Paso, Texas native earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas-El Paso in kinesiology.
