NBA D-League Moves Offices to NYC, Causing President Phil Evans to Resign

NEW YORK, May 18, 2007 – Phil Evans will resign as President of the NBA Development League (D-League), effective July 1.  Evans has decided not to relocate his family when the D-League makes its upcoming move from Greenville, S.C., to the NBA's headquarters in New York City.  

A successor for Evans, who will serve as a consultant on D-League matters for the NBA, will be named shortly.

“Phil has played a key role in the growth and success of the D-League since its inception in 2001,” said NBA Commissioner David Stern.  “His leadership and work ethic have helped lay the foundation for the D-League's continued growth and we are deeply appreciative of his contributions.”

The D-League's relocation to New York City will help foster the league's continued growth by giving it direct access to the support and resources of the NBA and WNBA.  The sixth season of the D-League concluded as the Dakota Wizards captured their first D-League crown on April 29, defeating the Colorado 14ers in overtime, 129-121, before a league championship game record crowd at the Bismarck Civic Center.  This season, 19 NBA teams assigned 24 players to D-League rosters, in addition to 22 Gatorade Call-ups. The D-League continues to grow with four expansion teams set to begin play in 2007-08 (Des Moines, Iowa; Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Hidalgo, Texas; and Orem, Utah).

Evans, named D-League President on May 23, 2002, has been a member of the league staff since the league’s inception in 2001. Before joining the D-League, Evans spent three seasons with the Continental Basketball Association in various positions, including Deputy Commissioner and General Counsel.
