May 9, 2008: The American Basketball Association league office received conformation today that the Vermont Frost Heaves and Manchester Millrats will be departing the league effective immediately. Although the ABA would like to see teams that were established under the ABA tutelage continue to flourish and grow with the ABA, we respect their decision and wish them well.
Since the ABA's return in 2001, the ABA has provided a platform for owners to create a team that showcases local talent and that offers fan friendly affordable entertainment. ABA teams not only bring high flying excitement on the basketball court, they also impact the community with several outreach initiatives. The ABA also provides continuing education and professional development resources for its players, and is committed to serving its local communities through various grassroots efforts.
Where would basketball be without the 3-point line and the ever popular Slam Dunk contest? Where would the sport be without Dr. J, Moses Malone, Larry Brown, George Gervin, Rick Barry, and Bob Costas? Prior to the NBA merger in 1976, the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and New Jersey Nets were all ABA teams.
The ABA's tradition has always been one that is innovative and diverse. The ABA is now entering its seventh year since its return. The ABA is bigger, stronger, and more focused on the tremendous opportunity ahead. The 2008-2009 season will be a remarkable sign of growth for the ABA as key adjustments are being made to solidify and secure a proper foundation that is both marketable and profitable.
