Maryland GreenHawks Sign Rob Spon as Head Coach - PBL

MLN Newswire - www.mlntherawfeed.com-Rockville, MD…The Maryland GreenHawks of the Premier Basketball League announced today the signing of head coach Rob Spon.

The GreenHawks had previously hired Ryan Krueger on October 26th to become the team’s head coach, but later released Krueger from his contract on November 3rd after he was offered a coaching position at Lehigh University, his alma matter.

“Building a team starts at the top with a winning leader,” said General Manager Adam Dantus. “We targeted two guys, and we actually hired them both within a 11 day period of time. Rob posses a great deal of knowledge within the league and brings with him a long track record of success to Maryland.”

Spon was the Head Coach of the Atlantic Conference Champion, Manchester Millrats, last season in the PBL.  Under his direction, he guided the Millrats to a 16-4 regular season record as well as leading the PBL in defense, allowing only 96.1 points per game.

Spon was also named PBL Coach of the Month last February after finishing the month with a perfect 8-0 record.

"I am thrilled to be coming to Maryland to work with a such a great organization," said Spon. “I am looking forward to getting another chance at winning a championship in the PBL. I am glad to be a part of it and also look forward to working with Adam who is making the GreenHawks successful on and off court.”

Spon has been a highly successful coach at various levels for over twenty years. In addition to the Millrats, he has been a head coach with the Gary Steelheads in the IBL, as well as an assistant coach in the CBA with the Dakota Wizards, Indiana Alley Cats, and Pittsburgh Xplosion.

In the now-defunct IBA, Spon coached back to back championships. He also serves as a part-time scout for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Spon will be in Maryland conducting the GreenHawks invitation only tryout on Saturday, November 14^th.
