SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants have named longtime minor league manager Shane Turner coordinator of minor league instruction, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today.
The former big league outfielder and infielder assumes the role Fred Stanley had before his promotion to director of player development. Turner is completing his 13th season in the Giants organization, having spent the past year as a roving outfield and baserunning instructor. He has posted a 598-646 lifetime record in 10 seasons as a minor league manager.
"Shane has been a fixture in our organization over the last 13 years and has a good relationship with all of the kids in our system," said Sabean. "He will truly be a huge resource for our young players as they move towards the big leagues."
The Cal State Fullerton product has spent four seasons as the skipper of the triple-A Fresno Grizzlies (2000-01 and 2005-06) and the double-A Norwich Navigators (2003-04). He has also piloted double-A Shreveport (1999), single-A San Jose (1997-98) and short-season Salem-Keizer (1996). Turner was named the best Major League managerial prospect for the California League by Baseball America in 1998, when he led San Jose to the league championship.
Originally selected by the Yankees in the sixth round of the 1985 June draft, he played professionally for 11 years. Turner appeared in 56 big league games with the Phillies (1988), Orioles (1991) and Mariners (1992).
